Dean Flaherty- Updates at UIC
- LCME – Surveys show that UIC students at UIC do well in their careers as physicians.
- Students were able to raise concerns about facilities, study space, academic advising, rotation evaluations, etc. Weakness is with financing from the state.
- Alumni reunion – Alumni enjoyed the presence of the students, beginning to rely on donations from alumni etc, so student presence it very important at these events. 30 million dollar gift given by an alumni will be used for facilities, 75 million overall would be needed to overhaul facilities at the school. Intend to replace the seats in the lecture halls with two seat desks to allow easier usage of computers etc. Key card access to areas around the school for study space

Transparency at UIC – Where is our tuition going?
- 29, 394 per year for in state tuition – 37 million each year from students . From 1996 to 2006 – tuition was 11,979 which is a 257% increase . It is a continual problem is statement that there is not enough funding/staffing to improve the educational environment , Students want to retain quality professors and advisors as a direct benefit of education (eg. Unable to keep Dr. Singh as an anatomy professor)
- It's a shame that faculty that have attended here regularly comment that the lecture halls have not changed in 20 years.
- Ideas for transparency : Seeing annual budget of how funds are allocated, letting students be involved with decision-making, how do departments get funding, why does UIC get less funding than private institutions.
Dean Dantes response to the student presentation:
- Tuition rates have been rising faster than inflation, and is a nation-wide issue, not just here at UIC. Research and Clinical revenue are the main sources of revenue – insurance and medicaid/medicare reimbursements have been constricted. Working on more substantial funding from the state, new board of trustees is aggressively pursuing options.
Student tuition, a breakdown:
- Provost – 6million used for library, facilities, business office, IT infrastructure etc.
- 5 million to OSA, Registrar, Fin Aid etc at all four campuses.
- 26 million for 1000 faculty members at UIC that spend their time teaching here.
